How We Research

Updated on

Every guide on Lunareb starts with one question: will this light work for the person who is shopping for it? That depends on your ceiling, your room and how many lights you need.

Here is how we answer it.

1. We start with your ceiling

A kitchen with new drywall, a living room with old can housings and a low basement ceiling all call for different lights. A canless wafer light and a retrofit light are not interchangeable.

So we say which kind fits which ceiling, and what to measure before you order.

2. We compare specs and features

We check the size, the pack count, the stated brightness and the color settings. We also look at whether the light dims, whether a junction box comes with it and whether it has a night-light mode.

Makers describe their own products, so we name the brand for every claim. We pass on certification and rating claims as the maker's words and point you to the label and the manual.

3. We look at buyer feedback

We read what buyers report after using a light. We look for patterns, such as flicker with certain dimmers, buzzing, loose clips and color that looks off.

One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.

4. We score each product

Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A light that is great for a kitchen can score lower in a guide about hallways.

Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.

5. We keep pages current

Lights change and some disappear from stores. Makers also sell near-identical models, so we check each pack size and what comes in the box, and we link only to new items.

We skip unknown listings with no track record and anything with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.

What our picks are not

Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have installed or used every light we cover.

We don't give wiring steps or load advice, and we don't call any light safe. For new wiring, hire a licensed electrician.
